What was the significance of the student uprising in Hungary?
Context
The Hungarian Uprising were consequences of four themes: De-Stalinization, Oppression, Russian control over Hungary, and falling living standards
The protest called for the end of communism seen with the rapid influence Nagy was spreading(against USSR principles)
Hungarians, including many students went to the streets to protest against Russian ideals and forces
The protest
Hungarian students began attempting to negotiate peace talks by protesting against the USSR with the use of provocative questions such as: Why is there no fish on the market?
Students in faculties expelled those who didn't participate in Hungarian Revolution discussions in order to create a concrete and unanimous idea
With thousands of students, they demanded the abolishment of Marxism as a class in university with the replacement of courses like science
Between October 30th and November 3rd, streets were places of protests, therefore with the Suez Canal crisis, no external assistance came to the student's aid
CONCLUSION OF THE PROTEST
With the abrupt intervention of the Russian army, the protestors stood no chance and many were imprisoned
All students who participated in the protest were permanently expelled from enrolling in any institution of higher learning
Background of these university students
By mid 20th century, around 70% of students were from peasant or worker families
Communist ideologies learned in school
The re-establishment of a democratic movement, MEFESZ, replacing a communist party
Impact
The protests initiated by Hungarian students forced the Soviets to abruptly exterminate the revolt with intense use of military power
The measures taken disregarded UN principles, therefore with the Suez crisis, these events didn't gain attention
Students used historical occurrences from Soviet history as their defense, which sparked revolt in the country of Romania. Those in Romania came to a conclusion that the revolt could only be initiated by those in society who aren't the biggest necessity for communism.
This revolt was forgotten for several years, therefore with some students writing autobiographies of these events, Hungarian history gained its deserved spotlight
The revolt caused a moment of imbalance from the Soviets as with the death of Stalin, different principles were being established by Kuhruskschv
It proved and was one of the earliest countries to go against the implemented communism
Those who witnessed the 1956 uprising
"As fighting continued, Budapest became paralysed and the number of wounded rose. Provision of essential services became critical not only for those in dire need, but for the whole capital. Only extraordinary solidarity could mobilise the massive assistance required."
