- Good design has endless benefits, but ultimately must be practical to meet client needs.
- Developing skills in creativity and innovation is critical for the interior design professional.
- Creative people find sources of inspiration through observation and engagement with their surroundings.
- A creative environment is one in which people feel acceptance and worth, and can think freely.
- Creativity and innovation are essential in developing products for interior spaces that promote the health, safety, and well-being (HSW) of clients.
- The design process is a method designers use to organize their work as they seek design solutions for clients.
- During the Pre-Design phase, the interior designer interviews the client to determine the client's problem, scope of the project, and whether the designer's skills match the client needs.
- The Programming phase involves fact-finding, client interviews, and on-site project analysis.
- During Schematic Design, the designer explores multiple solution ideas for the client's problem.
- During Design Development, the designer refines the designs and decisions made by the designer and client during the Schematic Design phase.
- During the Construction Documents phase, the designer prepares formal, standards-driven documents for the design construction and installation.
- As the design comes to life during Construction Administration, the designer manages all aspects of the project to ensure it meets the client's program.
- During the Move-In and Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) phase, the designer schedules the move-in date and systematically evaluates client satisfaction after project completion.

post-occupancy evaluation (POE)
a diagram or table that lists each room or space
shows such vertical functions as elevators and stairways the designer must consider and place in the same location on each floor
A drawing illustration of a system whose major parts or components are represented by blocks
A freehand drawing representing spaces joined by solid, broken, or wavy lines to define and plan the interaction between the spaces
to capture in a 2D illustration the priority relationships of spaces to each other as identified in the adjacency matrix
a type of concept-map that uses ovals and circles to represent rooms and their relationships
regulations adopted by a community to govern the construction of buildings
authorization to construct the building in a specific location
quiz written questions
Why are specifications an important part of the contract documents? Give an example of what specifications include.
"Specifications provide the precise written instructions that builders and tradespeople use to describe the appearance, performance, and construction methods for the building of the structure or interior." (208)
specifications can include information about "manufacturer's brands, model numbers, and performance expectations" (208)
What is the difference between qualitative research and quantitative research?
Qualitative research uses personal observations to figure out the preexisting building and how it "shapes human behavior." (pg. 194) While Quantitative research looks at numerical facts related to space.
A document that outlines the client project--functions, specific need requirements in each space, issues, and current status.
each contractor submits a sealed envelope detailing the type of work to complete, by whom, and at what cost.
a table that lists each room or space of the client's project in the rows of the left-hand column, and lists each issue--as prioritized by the client--as column headings
an abstract idea, thought, notion, or image-- involves an imagery-evoking statement that describes the desired mood or feeling for the client's interior space(s)
