WHY COLLECTIVISE - Coggle Diagram
WHY COLLECTIVISE
weakening opposition and securing his position as leader of the USSR
Stalin-Bukharin rivalry
both were fighting to become Lenin's successor
both had opposing views
NEP VS COLLECTIVISATION
NEP
= 1928, failing, rising food prices, had capitalist tendencies, wasn't benefiting the country anymore
COLLECTIVISATION
= had started it and was working, was more orietned towards socialism
this humiliated Bukharin who was still supporting the NEP, Lenin's economic policy.
Ideology and global context
Central planned economies were failing in 1929 due to the Great Depression => showed the problems with capitalism and thus why they should avoid it and transition to full communism
Collectivisation pleased other communist leaders as it was more communist than the NEP and thus would allow the USSR to achieve its communist utopia
Dekulakisation and removal of the bourgeoisie
would reduce the power of the wealthier peasants and thus assure stalin that he have full control over the peasant class
getting rid of them also meant more power in general and assuring that collectivisation wouldnt be interrupted and that he could continue to stay in power
Dekulakisation
Kulaks = class enemies of the poorer peasants => 1929 they are liquidated as a class
kulaks were then used as a scapegoat as Stalin began to claim that all those who opposed collectivisation were kulaks & capitalists and thus would be treated as such => the definition of kulaks was skewed
kulaks had previously been accuse dof preventing the growth of the soviet economy & the NEP had benefited them => getting rid of them would ensure industrialisation
no more kulaks = no possibility of a bourgeois class
COUNTERCLAIM: It was done for economics reasons
the USSR needed to further industrialise in order to catch up with the rets of the Western power as they were still behind + needed to become a self sufficient state
Limited machinery.
s still behind industrial wise => reason for the 5YP as it takes care of industry
=> through selling the surplus to the struggling western countries they would be able to pay for their machinery
can argue that wanting to industrialise the country is also a political aim as the country was behind and improving it and tis economy would only be beneficial to Stalin in keeping his role as leader of the USSR :
Lack of surplus
people were hungry and dying
wanting to supply towns with food would also help boost his political image => if people aren't dying they can support him as well as support the one who ensure that they wouldn't die
REBUTTAL: difficult to separate economic aims form political aims
woudl also help make the Soviet Union a self sufficient state that could also sell surplus abroad
Would prove that a socialist country could exist on a global scale (‘Socialism in one country’)
Strengthen the Soviet Union’s ability to withstand external threats.
Would also prevent from needing for foreign intervention => would go against the natonalist aspect of socialism in one country if he did.
