Review and Assess
- There are many specialty areas of practice within the field of interior design.
- Residential design involves the planning and design of dwellings while commercial design involves the planning and design of primarily public spaces.
- Although there are many differences between residential and commercial interior design, both require the same education and some of the same skills.
- Residential design reflects the client's tastes, preferences, and functional needs in creating a home or dwelling.
- Trends in residential design include such specialty areas as well-designed smaller dwellings, remodeling, aging-in-place, multigenerational living, sustainability and green design, and specialty spaces.
- As with commercial design projects, residential design projects often involve a variety of team members, budget constraints, and varying time lines.
- The health, safety, and well-being (HSW) of the public is a particular concern to designers of public spaces.
- Specialty areas within commercial interior design include, but are not limited to, workplace/office, hospitality, healthcare, institutional, and retail design.
- Trends in commercial design specialties expand the designer's options for creative, fulfilling, meaningful work for a lifetime.
