Story Dimensions + Implementing them in planning techniques
Story Dimensions
Scope; show the quantity of developments in a story, how big or important is this
It is important the reader knows what is happening and where
Diversity; it is important to show all of the
different
ways the development plays itself out
Intensity; it is crucial to show what degree people or places are involved or affected;
Variety
Sources! Using a variety of sources in a story
Using a variety of sources helps avoid being accused of "one sided articles"
Using a variety of sources can give more in depth point of views
Expert opinion, authorities or facts used in variety, not too much, but not too little
Movement!
This is ACTION! Action is important in a story.
For a story that does not have natural movement or progression; writers can create their own
Create movement by shifting back and forth, alternating different elements to keep the reader curious for more.
Scope Variety and movement when played together
Scope can be found in Variety, there are diverse elements in the scope of a story that will feed the dimension of variety
Variety can feed the dimension of movement also; is there a variety of action?
How about the scope, consider the movement within the scope dimension as well.
Planning and Execution
Everyone has their own unique planning and execution techniques
6 elements to consider: History, Scope, Reasons, Impacts, countermoves, futures
Strongly consider these, write them out, for each one list them in importance
1 = most important 6 = can be downplayed or even left out
1st step in planning: look at the six elements, consider each of them and the importance of them, let these shape the story
2nd step is to set priorities; what elements are more important than others, what needs the most attention; where is the action? play to that.
Determine the main elements of the story, decide what secondary elements need to be thinned or even tossed out.
3rd step, reporting
finding a "wise man," one who is knowledgeable in what you are writing about; this helps to inform you if you can find one, apparently they are rare
Find a "Paper man," someone who works for a business that seriously studies and/or count things, he may have the information you're looking for in great detail
Find a Rabbi for profile articles; this is Rabbi's are knowledgeable or even near the scene of action and can help find the profile subject.
Sources are huge; talk to people about things, ask questions, be curious
Seek wise, knowledgeable individuals who can inform you and give lots of insight
Rabbi's have good experience and connections with people, they can help with finding who you need/want to speak with!
Planning highlights
Scope, Variety and movement need to be considered
Play to the strengths of others
My own planning ideas; following a messy outline and including what is listed in the book;
Consider the 6 elements by creating an outline on paper
list each element with a quick summary below the element...enough to give me insight on whether or not I really need to prioritize that
How can I give justice to who or what my story is about; consider how I would want my own story to be told
