CEREBELLUM (Little Brain)
Cerebellar lesions :
-
-
- Posterior Lobe, Lateral hemisphere
-
Structure
-
Location
-posterior cranial fossa, infratentorial cavity
-posterior to medulla oblongata, pons & 4th ventricles (between pons and cerebellum)
-2 hemispheres (divided by vermis)
-
-
-
Function
- Adjustment of muscle tone
- Motor Learning - motor skills
- Maintain posture, balance and equilibrium
-
-
-
-
- pleasure or reward response
-
-
-
- ‘cerebral’ : brain

Can cause:
- Equilibrium
- Nystagmus (Rapid, repetitive eye movement)
1.Horizontal nystagmus (involve side to side eye movement)
- Vertical nystagmus
(Cause up and down movement)
- Rotary nystagmus
(circular eye movement)
-
Can cause:
- Truncal ataxia
- Dysmetria (inability to control the distance, speed, and range of motion necessary to perform smoothly coordinated movements).
- Dysdiadochokinesia (Difficulty to make movements exhibiting a rapid change of motion).
- Dysarthria ( Difficulty in speech due to weakness of speech muscles).
- Intention tremor
