In this period, the Nazis reorganised to benefit from the Weimar republic's weaknesses and economic problems. Hitler's appeal as a leader also benefitted them
Wall street crash
Us companies lost billions in value overnight - many banks and businesses were ruined - worldwide depression resulted
US stopped lending money to Germany and demanded all loans to be repaid
German businesses had to pay back loans, received no more investment from the US and had to pay increased taxed to the government
German government couldn't borrow money from US for reparations. refused to print more money so increased taxes and made cuts in unemployment and cut wages for government workers
German people: Millions lost their jobs and businesses reduced staff or closed - with no work and benefits slashed many sunk into poverty
The wall street crash and mass unemployment led to massive dissatisfaction with the Weimar republic
This was exploited by hitler as many saw the Weimar republic to be weak and instead saw Hitler as a strong leader
The Hitler appeal
he was a strong leader
His image appeared on most publicity material
He travelled the country giving speeches and talking on the radio
The party adapted modern technology
Also, the mass scare/intimidation tactics of the SA (stormtroopers) helped to increase support for Nazis
How the depression benefited hitler
Economic problems lead to unemployment led to mass dissatisfaction with weak weimar government which then lead to greatly increased membership of extreme left and right wing parties
Although the depression benefitted both the Nazi and communist party the Nazi party grew faster
