        is worsened by the fact that he wasnt present at Lenin's funeral (most likely due to Stalin giving him the wrong date as he was supposed to give the eulogy)
        
        1925: then forms the United opposition
        
        Stalin uses the ban on factionalism to expel them in 1927 from the Party
      - openly critiqued Stalin which would turn many members of the Communist Party against him as he was the one with the most power and the majority of the members were given jobs thanks to him
  - - - FAILURE OF THE NEP
        
        caused bread shortages, rising food prices, was starting to fail so Stalin introduced new policies for agriculture and industrial = Collectivisation and the 5YP
        
        is adopting a new 'left course'
        
        people now move to side with Stalin as they dont want to be supporting a failing policy, start critiquing the NEP and when Bukharin started to protest he was expelled from the Politburo
      - allowed him to gain more power and slowly began replacing Bukharin supporters with his own
- - - - esp. evident since party membership increased after Lenin's death => new members w poor education followed stalin and were thus easier to manipulate and were now loyal to him as he was the one to give them jobs
  - - - means congress is filled w Stalinist delegates
  - - - since stalin controlled part of the votes it meant he could limit his opposition
