Because of the focus on minimal government, European manufacturers were able to use their money to create factories, mines, and mills without being hampered by government rules. While this permitted industrialists to amass vast sums of money, it frequently resulted in appalling working conditions for the individuals who worked in these establishments. Low pay, long work hours, demanding and risky job, few or no benefits, and the continual worry of being dismissed and replaced were all factors that employees faced during the Industrial Revolution. While these conditions benefited the affluent, they were devastating for the rest of society, particularly the working class.
