Nucleic acids. These biomolecules contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus. Chains of sub-units called nucleotides, which consist of base, sugar and phosphate groups covalently bonded together. If the sugar is ribose then the nucleic acid formed is RNA, if the sugar is deoxyribose, then DNA is formed. An example for a nucleotide (a nucleic acid’s monomer) would be a “Adenine” (C5H5N5), and an example for a nucleic acid (a nucleic acid’s polymer) would be a “RNA” (C27H34N6O22P2).
