Examples:
-
Lipids
A group of organic molecules that are insoluble in water but soluble in non-polar organic solvents
- Contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
- do not contain a common recurring monomer. However several types of lipids contain fatty acid chains as part of their overall structure
Composed of monomers called: fatty acids:
long chains of hydrocarbons that may or may not contain double bonds
Proteins:
Contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen (additionally sulphur is common component, but it is not present in all proteins)
-
Joined together, they form: polypeptide chains

the elements of life
they are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen

organic molecules
its core is CARBON
it forms the basis of organic life due to its ability to form large and complex molecules via covalent bonding
carbon atoms can form four covalent bonds, with bonds between carbon atoms being particularly stable
