The Feudal system
William needed soldiers to maintain control in England. This was very expensive so he used the Feudal system as a way to ensure he had troops without having to pay for it.
William granted land to tenants-in-chief as rewards for loyalty. In return, they were required to provide him with drugs when the king needed them. tenants in chief granted land to those who were loyal to them in exchange for their service in an army.
