How our planet works
Every 23.9 hours, the Earth rotates on its axis, defining day and night for surface dwellers. Seasons are caused by this axis of rotation being tilted 23.4 degrees away from the plane of Earth's orbit around the sun. Summer occurs in whichever hemisphere is tilted closer to the sun, while winter occurs in the opposite hemisphere.

How our Earth developed
When the solar system settled into its present format about 4.5 billion years ago, gravity drew swirling gas and dust in to form the third planet from the Sun. Earth, like the other terrestrial planets, has a central core, a rocky mantle, and a solid crust.
