LESSON 1: DESCRIBING MATTER
Matter is anything that has mass ad takes up space
Every form of matter has two properties -
physical
and
chemical
properties.
Physical properties
: characterstic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance.
Examples
Density
Color
Melting and boiling point
Chemical properties
: characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances.
Examples
Flammability
toxicity
pH value
LESSON 2: CLASSIFYNG MATTER
All matter in the universe is
made of more than 100 different substances
called elements.
Comparison between atom and element:
Atom
: all matter is made of atoms; an atom is the basic particle from which elements are made.
Element
: a substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances.
Comparison between compound and molecule:
Molecule
: a group of two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond.
Compounds
: molecules made of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
Matter can be classified as:
Pure substances
Substances that are made up of only one kind of particle and have a fixed or constant structure.
They are classified in:
Elements
: a substance that consists of only one type of atom.
Compounds
: substances when two or more elements are combined chemically in a fixed ratio.
Mixtures
Different kinds of elements combined physically and not chemically.
They are classified in:
Heterogeneous
: a mixture where you can see the different parts and they can easily be separaed out.
Homogeneous
: a mixture with substances that are so evenly mixed that you can't see the different parts and it is difficult to separate its parts.
LESSON 3: MEASURING MATTER
There exist different measurements for matter:
Mass
: the amount of matter in an object is its mass, which doesn't change with location even if the force of gravity changes.
The SI system uses
grams
and
kilograms
for mass. The way to calculate it is
multiply the volume by the density
of the object.
Density
: measure of the mass of a material in a given volume.
It is determined by
dividing its mass by its volume
. Its SI unit is the kg/m³.
Volume
: the amount of space that matter occupies.
Volume is calculated by
multiplying the measures of the object
(leghth, width and height). Its SI unit is the cubic meter.
LESSON 4: CHANGES IN MATTER
Changes in matter are classified in two types; chemical and physical changes
Physical changes
: alters the form or appearance of matter but does not turn any substance into a different one.
Examples
Changes of state
Changes in shape or form
Changes of color
Chemical changes
: a change in matter that produces one or more new substances.
Examples
Burning paper
Cooking
Rust
