chapter 2, Atoms,ions and compounds
proton and neutron have equal mass
electron mass is 1/1836 of a proton
proton positive charge
Atom has neutral charge
electron negative charge
neutron has no charge
same number of protons and electrons in atoms
most contain same or slightly more neutrons than protons
atomic number is number of protons
isotopes are atoms of the same element with diffrent numbrs of neutrons and diffrent masses.
the number of neutrons has no effect on the reactions of the element, therefore diffrent isotopes react the same way
higher mass isotopes of an elemnt have a higher melting point, boling point and density.
mass number= A (number of protons + number of neutrons (found on top)
Atomic number=Z (number of protons) (found on bottom)
ion=number of electrons is diffrent from protons.
cations are positive ions
anions are negative ions
always show relative atomic charge.
