Notes
Jack
Jack is presented as someone who doesn't want to obey and instead wants his own authority
'I ought to be chief I'm head boy. I can sing c sharp'
He declares his choir boys 'the hunters' after not becoming cheif
Jack wants some semblance of authority
Jack doesn't want to have to obey Ralph
Foreshadows his creation of own 'tribe'
Jack is presented as arrogant and without thought for the boys and littluns
'His specs! Use them as burning glasses'
Jack aggressively snatches glasses from piggy's face to start the fire - showing his lack of care for Piggy and foreshadowing his further distaste for Piggy as the novel goes on
Jack is shown to be one of the first to resort to savagery - using his mask
'I thought I would kill'
Couldn't kill the beast because of his last semblance of civilisation
'The mask was a thing on it's own, behind which Jack hid'
The mask gives Jack the idea that he can separate himself and therefore he believes he can do whatever he wishes
Jack leads the rest of the biguns to savagery
'sharpen a stick at both ends'
Ralph
Ralph has no hidden depth or unhealthy character traits
'There was a mildness about his eyes that proclaimed no devil' - Chapter 1 when Ralph is being first described
Suggests Ralph is gentle and can be trusted - 'no devil' emphasises Golding's devout Christian nature by picturing the devil as true evil to show Ralph's good.
Contradicting argument
However - Golding uses this idea to push the fact that everyone has 'mankind's essential illness' when Ralph joins in with the killing of Simon so regardless of how good Ralph is everyone has the innate evil infecting mankind
Easy to sympathise with
Ralph represents order and civilisation
First to blow conch to unite the island
Elected as first leader by the boys
Dedicates efforts to keeping fire going
They'll see our smoke
Ralph is focused on practical matters and wants the boys to have the highest chance of being saved and surviving
Hobbes and Rousseau -
Ralph is the least changed boy at the end of the novel
Didn't give into savagery
Only boy able to communicate with officer
'Ralph wept for the end of innocence' 'And the death of a true friend named Piggy'
Although he is the least changed, Ralph is still scarred by the other boy's actions and is not unchanged by the savagery that occurred on the island
Ralph is understanding with the boys
Listens to Piggy's advice
'new understanding that Piggy had given him'
Builds shelter
Reveals Ralph's awareness that Piggy's thinking skills are superior to his own
Only boy to accept what they did to Simon
