COMPONENTS OF MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHING

CURRICULUM

Elements of the Curriculum

It is an instructional content or lessons taught in a specific course or program.

The learning standards or learning objectives
are expected to meet.

The knowledge and skills that learners are
expected to learn and do.

The units and lessons that teachers teach, the expected outcomes expected from the learners like projects and assignment assigned to them

The set of books, materials, videos, presentations, and other learning materials to be used in the course or program.

Aims, Goals and Objectives

are the specific and measurable statements that are expected of what the learners should do, know and be able to do from what they know and understand like the skills and processes learned from the lesson.

Content standard is a statement of what the learners are expected to know and understand.

Performance standard is a statement that describes what the students will be able to do from they what they learned and understand

These are the specific ideas or skills that are expected from students to know
and manifest in their learnings; statements necessary to be accomplished related to the contentand performance standards.

These are assessment techniques and styles that maybe used by the teacher to check the understanding of the learners.

THE IMPORTANCE CURRICULUM

It helps develop all the thinking and process skills of a learner

It decides the capacity of the learners to learn, skills and processes

It gives emphasis to provide the essential knowledge of the learners for life-long learning

It gives emphasis to provide the essential knowledge of the learners for life-long learning

Mathematics and science curriculum allows teachers and schools to plan and be flexible in developing alternative curriculum modes to meet the need of the learners.

Curriculum Framework is a blueprint that guides the implementation of content standards as it contains necessary resources to assist the school, teachers and curriculum developers.

INSTRUCTION

TEACHING APPROACH

A set of principles, beliefs, or ideas, about the nature of learning which is translated into the classroom

TEACHING STRATEGY

TEACHING METHOD

TEACHING TECHNIQUES

A way of approaching the problem or task, modes of operation for achieving a particular goal or planned design in teaching

A systematic way of doing something. It means that teaching should be orderly and with logical arrangement or procedural

These are the steps a teacher should do or follow to make instruction easier. It is like a style or trick to accomplish immediate outcome or goal.

It is the teaching and learning of knowledge, skills and attitude which are delivered by the teacher using planned activities.

TYPES OF INSTRUCTION

Direct Instruction

Indirect Instruction

Interactive Instruction

Experimental instruction

Independent instruction

Alternative Delivery Mode of Instruction

A learner-centered instruction that requires learners to interact with one another to acquire new understanding of a concept

A learner-centered instruction where learners do activities on their own and have their own discovery from what they do

It is a teacher-centered instruction where the teacher gives the instruction with little to no output from the students

A learner-centered instruction that makes learners to be decision-maker. A great example of this is distance learning.

A learner-centered instruction where learners teach another learners because they are more likely to retain information they learned when they are actively engaged and participate in learning experience

Online learning

Distance (Remote) Learning

type of distance learning that takes place over
the Internet and often referred to as “e- learning”.

Synchronous distance learning (SDL) - occurs when the teacher and learners interact in different places at the same agreed time. The learners enrolled in synchronous courses are generally required to log on to their computer during a set time.

The instruction is relayed through technology, such as internet, video conferencing, and online assessments.

Asynchronous distance learning (ADL) occurs when the teacher and the learners interact in different places and during different times. Learners can complete their work whenever they please to do so.

Flexible learning

Method of learning where learners are given freedom as to how, what, when, and where they want to learn which is usually delivered through technology

Blended learning

combines on-site classroom learning with
online learning where the learners can take part to determine the time, pacing, and place of their learning.

ASSESSMENT

WHAT DO TEACHERS ASSESS?

Do students know?

How well do students know?

What students do NOT know?

It is a key part of the educational system which is the systematic basis for making inferences in the development of the learner by collecting data and review them which will help teachers to conclude whether the students are improving or having progress.

FORMS OF ASSESSMENT

Assessment as Learning

Assessment for Learning

Assessment of Learning

Learners reflect on their own learning and make possible adjustment to have deeper understanding

It is an approach of teaching and learning which creates feedback to improve learner's performance

It is the record of the student's performance that shows their achievement in all finished tasks and activities.

KINDS OF ASSESSMENT

Traditional Assessment

Authentic Assessment

Performance-based Assessment

Pen-and-paper form of assessment

Reflection of student's learning, achievement, motivation, and attitude

Demonstration of knowledge, understanding, and proficiency
