3) Melissa Lucio, a mother of 12, was accused of killing her youngest daughter, Mariah, in 2007, who 2 days before her death fell down a flight of stairs. Mariah was found dead in her bed after not waking up from a nap. The family mourned her death, yet the police didn’t take into consideration of the family’s emotions as they quickly assumed Melissa killed her daughter and arrested her for the crime. Melissa knew she didn’t kill her daughter, and repeatedly said she was innocent, but due to the harsh interrogation methods she faced and the state of mind she was in because of her daughter’s death, she was manipulated to confess to her daughter’s death. In her trial, she pleaded not guilty, yet the judge thought otherwise and sentenced her to death. Melissa’s execution date was scheduled for Apr 27, 2022, but thanks to The Innocence Project in bringing awareness and help to Melissa’s case, she escaped execution and was given another chance to prove her innocence in her upcoming trial.
