he ordered the inhabitants and army to surrender, saying that if they didnt, there would be bloodshed
They refused, so Cromwell's forces broke into the town and destroyed most of the defensive positions, except from the fort where some royalists and soldiers were located
He offered them a deal, saying that if they surrender now, he would spare the lives of the governor and 200 men
Sir Arthur Aston agreed, however the men who surrendered were taken to a nearby windmill and killed, under Cromwell's instruction
Violence continued throughout the town whit rumours of babies being used a human shields
Cromwell was beseging the town of drogheda

Catholic armies had also carried out massacres in 164, and Cromwells army had a god given duty to avenge the deaths of protestants
Garrisons attacked contained English royalists as well as Irish, so they were part pf the alliance that Charles created, so deserved to be punished
