New Yorker: After Empire
"When the first missionaries arrive, those who have suffered most under the village culture are the first to join the church."
When colonizers arrive to new lands and undiscovered lands, the native people suffer at the hands of these people and fall into the ways and traditions of these new people. In Things Fall Apart Nwoye, Okonkwo's son, is one of the first to fall into the culture and ways of the new white men.
The purpose is to convert the old way of living which includes culture, beliefs and other traditions to the culture, beliefs and traditions of the colonizers. That is why at the end of the book the narration changes from an igbo man to a colonizer.
"The missionaries, though ignorant of local customs, are not all bad: one in particular treats the villagers with respect."
Over time, some colonizers form certain relationships with native people in communities. Not all colonizers are seen as devilish beings
Colonization
"The Commissioner went away, taking three or four of the soldiers with him. In the many years in which he had toiled to bring civilization to different parts of Africa he had learned a number of things.'
This quote from the end of Things Fall Apart shows the idea of colonization in a few crucial ways. First off, the text is no longer being narrated by an Igbo man but instead a white colonizer. This shows that throughout the story the white men were slowly trying to take control of Okonkwo and his people and at the end of Things Fall Apart they have accomplished their goal. Colonization is the taking over of one's people, and the fact the at the end of the novel the colonizer is now the narrator shows that they have took over and colonized the Igbo people. The commissioner also mentions that he has brought his civilization to many different parts of Africa. That line from the text is a large part of what colonization is in a whole.
