Factors that contribute to an effective interviewing session
Good listener & questioner
Pay full attention while the informant answers the questions asked to ensure that the answers given are in accordance with the requirements of the question.
Master the technique of asking questions, follow the structure of the interview questions (structure interview) and avoid asking sensitive questions
Good preparation
To make sure the interviewer understands the topic to be asked to the informant
Proficient in handling the situation before, during and after the interview session is conducted :
Build rapport with interview participants
Being friendly and open-minded helps to create a rapport with the interviewee so that they are willing to share more information during the interview session.
Implement the probing technique
Use probes to elicit a more thoughtful and thorough
response from the interviewee.
E.g., ask the interviewee to clarify something that was
said earlier to obtain more in-depth information.
Recording the responses
Jot down important information provided by the
interviewee to collect more complete and accurate
information.
Written notes should include observations of both verbal
and non-verbal behaviors as they occur, and immediate
personal reflections about the interview.
