      - The 'new' world presents the characters with specific circumstance to which they must adapt to, the most significant being the lawless landscape. With 'actors and musicians carrying guns and crossbows' p.119 having to take these type of measures, it shows us that the disparity between the pre- and post-collapse world; in the latter, that even entertainers and artists must prioritise survival protocols and acumen above all else.
- - - - The mantra of Kirsten and the travelling symphony is 'survival is insufficient' (p.58). The concept of providing entertainment to those who survived as they make there way around shows that they want to have purpose in their lives. By performing they can express their creativeness and provide audiences with hope and joy, in a world where there usually is none.
      - Jeevan was able to continue his passion and fulfill his purpose in life of becoming a doctor in one of the new settlements to help those in need. This comes after wanting to become a paramedic before the collapse
