Survival as arbitrary
-Georgia Flu causes death on a global scale and forces the characters to navigate this new and uncertain world.
the flu's efficiency derives people of the opportunity to resist, and those who survive do so only by chance. Clark for example 'managed by some choreography of luck to avoid passing too close to anyone who was already infected'. p.223-4
While Clark tries to explain to Tyler that the reason some people die was 'because they were exposed to a certain virus', and that they 'weren't' Tyler is still unable to believe or understand, and instead chooses to believe that pandemic happened for because of a divine act in which 'people who were good' were 'saved'. p260
The 'new' world presents the characters with specific circumstance to which they must adapt to, the most significant being the lawless landscape. With 'actors and musicians carrying guns and crossbows' p.119 having to take these type of measures, it shows us that the disparity between the pre- and post-collapse world; in the latter, that even entertainers and artists must prioritise survival protocols and acumen above all else.
Those who survived the new world are now faced with many threats that range from feral gangs to infections that cause 'the kind of stupid death that never would've happened in the old world' p.267 and so survival is a constant battle.
