Periodic Table
Group 7 - Halogens
-
-
Physical properties:
-
Bigger molecules as you go down the group; Therefore more electrons and stronger intermolecular forces
More energy is hence required to overcome these intermolecular forces so there is a higher boiling point
-
Group 0 - Noble gases
-
Therefore they are unreactive and do not easily form molecules because of their stable arrangement of electrons
Boiling point increases as you go down the group because of size of molecule increasing as you go down the group
-
Group 1 - Alkali Metals
Reactions
-
-
-
In depth reactions:
-
With water:
Lithium: Fizzes steadily, gradually disappears
-
Sodium: fizzes rapidly, melts into a ball
With chlorine:
-
Sodium: Burns with bright yellow flame, produces clouds of white powder that settle on the container
-
Reactivity
-
-
-
There is a weaker force of attraction between the outer electron and the nucleus so the outer electron is more easily lost
