Computer simulation
Different simulation approaches
LaGrangian: Predicts distortion of mesh as heat transfer and thermal stresses develop e.g. pipe distortion
Eulerian: Modelling the elements as they pass through the mesh e.g. fluid in the
Code
Open: User can access software and modify to achieve better outcome
Closed: More expensive and used by e.g. large company with knowledge of casting but not coding
Grid sensitvity
Fewer, larger elements is cheaper and faster but not as accurate
Many small elements is slower and more expensive but more accurate
Thermophysical properties
Density: dilatometery
Specific heat capacity: calorimetry
Thermal conductivity: Laser flash diffusivity (time taken for laser to pass through thin disk of material) and calculated using SHC and density
Measurements must be taken in solid and liquid states and must be accurate
Validation
Validating
Use a thermocouple along the casting route to measure the correct temperature :thermometer:
Must be thin and stiff
Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) (Bill's love child)
Tracks position of radioactive particles using gamma radiation :radioactive_sign:
Analogue fluid eg. water
Fields metal (similar suface tension but low melting point)
Criteria
Applied to the model to say if a particular defect is predicted or not
Eg. ingate velocity
