writing about prose and drama
questions could be about themes, characters or settings
the question could be about:
the personality of a character
a specific mood or atmosphere
a specific theme or message
attitudes towards a theme or issue
relationships between characters
when the question asks you to comment on how the writer presents something to the reader, focus on language, structure and form
example questions
how does stevenson present the theme of reputation
this question asks you to focus on the theme of reputation
write about how the relationship between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy is presented at different points in the novel.
'How' questions want you to think about the writer's techniques and use of literary features
authors use language, structure and form to present things.
'Elizabeth and Mr Darcy' are the focus of the question - you need to use a range of examples from the text to support your answer.
some questions ask about an extract from the text
if you're asked to write about an extract, focus on language, structure and form. you're expected to pick out and explain some of the features from the text
example question 1
write about the presentation of childhood in this extract. focus only on the extract below rather than the rest of the text you've studied.
clear that you need to focus on the extract. don't make any points on the rest of the text
example question 2
using the extract below as a starting point, write about how Dickens presents the theme of justice in 'Great Expectations'
this means you need to explore how the theme is presented in the extract and the rest of the text
make sure you answer the question you're given
plan your answer to make your answer more clear and concise
make sure everything you write answers the questions - irrelevant points won't get you any marks.
introduce some of your own ideas
write about your personal response to the text. think about what emotions it evokes and whether you like or empathise with certain characters.
