Die Casting
Gravity
Liquid metal poured into mould and flows under gravity, die is resistant to thermal shock, die temp of 300C, internal interfaces of die sprayed with refractory material to reduce heat transfer (2-3m/s)
Low pressure
Die is placed over a sealed furnace that is then pressurised to force metal upwards into die (0.5m/s)
Dies are coated in graphite for smooth finish, capable of high quality as no oxide skins or air entrapment
High Pressure
Piston pushes metal into mould at 40-50m/s, metal is nearly atomised.
-
Squeeze casting
mix between castign and forging, used for expensive castings
-
-
Investment (Lost wax)
Wax pattern, tree, dipped in slurry, wax is melted and mould fired, metal poured in
-
Direct chill
water cooled mould, movable bottom is pulled downwards continuously
Lost foam
Foam pattern coated in slurry, placed in sand mould, metal is poured in and melts out foam
-
:red_cross: Gas and viscous residue (can be carcinogenic), cost
Cosworth
Fill mould, roll over with positive pressure, drain metal, remove mould
:check:Counter gravity to avoid surface entrapment, zircon sand for rapid solidification, roll over for better feeding
Hitchiner
Tree of moulds with downwards sprue, metal vacuumed in, once ingates are frozen vacuum is released
:check:Used for steel automotive parts, high yield, better mech properties, not used for Al

Casting Defects

-
Gas porosity
Liquid metal dissolves gas, usually hydrogen, causing embrittlement
