Narrative devices: Secrets and lies
Formalism (structure):
Cafe scene:
the first time that the actresses of Hortense and Cynthia had met each other - he wanted the first meeting to look as real as possible.
7 minuets long - continuous, so we can see their true reactions to what they are doing.
Hortense:
externally, she is acting very professionally throughout the scene, however, she may be internally terrified - she knows how she should behave around others she doesn't really know.
She is the dominant character in the scene - doing all the talking
Cynthia:
"I bet your really disappointed with me" - she lacks self-esteem and believes Hortense is going to make an opinion on her straight away.
She can't look Hortense in the eyes or bring herself to talk - she is ashamed of herself
She is crying throughout the cafe scene -
The lack of score throughout the cafe scene means that the audience is not being influenced to feel a certain way - they can decide how the scene makes them feel - a more personal response to the scene.
Structuralism (binary opposites):
Cynthia's house and Maurice/Monica's house:
Monica was so proud of her 6 bedroom house and couldn't wait to show it off to Cynthia
Monica is middle class whereas Cynthia is working class.
Monica's house is very empty and plain
Cynthia's house is her old childhood house and is cluttered with all of her childhood and father's belongings - she is very sentimental - doesn't like to throw anything away
she lost out on her childhood and had to grow up quickly so she could take care of her brother and father
may suggest that she keeps those items so she can hold onto what little childhood she had.
Maurice and Cynthia:
Cynthia has had to work for what she has however Maurice had it handed to him
