- - - - Switching is a better solution than mesh or Star topologies
        
        Switched network consist of a series of interlinked nodes, called switches.
        
        Switches are devices capable of creating temporary connections b/w 2 or more devices linked to the switch.
        
        At layer 2, switches are done through "switches". layer 3 switching is done through "Routers"

        Two methods of Switching
        
        Circuit switching
        
        A set of switches connected by a physical links.
        
        Connection b/w two stations, is a dedicated path made of 1 or more links.
        
        Each connection uses only one dedicated channel on each link.

        Actual communication in a circuit switching network requires 3 phases
        
        Connection setup
        
        Data transfer
        
        Connection Teardown
        
        Recourses need to be reserved during the setup phase; they remain dedicated for the entire transfer of data until the teardown phase

        Efficiency
        
        Not as efficient as the other two types of network. recourses are allocated during the whole duration of connection. Making them unavailable to others
        
        The delay is minimal.
        
        Packet switching
        
        Virtual-circuit approach
        
        It's a cross b/w circuit-switched and datagram network. It has characteristic both.

        One station wants to transfer a large amount of data across the network to another station.
        
        Step.1) Virtual circuit breaks the large data into n packets & determines an optimal temporary path through the network

        Datagram approach
        
        Each packet is treated independently; even if its part of a multipack transmission. Packets are referred to as datagrams.
