determinism
hard determinsim
all human behaviour has a cause everything we do is dictated by internal and external forces beyond our control
soft determinism
scientists explain what determines behaviour but we have the freedom to make rational conscious choices in everyday life
people are passive, free will is an illusion- behaviour is predetermined by internal or external forces.
Evaluation
deterministic view is not compatible with the legal system in terms of responsibility, in a court of law the aim is to hold offenders responsible for their actions. if behaviour is predetermined, it suggests that defenefor people who commit crimes is that they have no control over their actions, this questions the mental element of a persons intention to commit crime.
could be argued that deterministic view has led to come positive contributions within society, it is consistent with the aims of science. human behaviour is orderly and obeys laws. places psychology on equal footing with established sciences.
