Possible BIG IDEAS
-
Foresty - Karakia/Rata and the Rakau vs forestry now (take what you need, sustainability. Element: Earth/AIR. Replanting pine rather than native. Different world views - slower process/soil. Patupaiarehe (flutes). Need vrs Greed. General idea: How trees are a significant resource for NZ for cultural, economic, recreational/tourism etc reasons.
-
Hauora - returning to a society that is beginning to understand the importance of Te Ao Māori views and the interconnectedness of the elements of wellbeing. Could also link this to the Captain planet idea. Element: Earth / Roots
Social science.
-
QUESTIONS:
How to incorporate Science/Social Science/Technology into the performance or just as part of our research and can go into this main brainstorm. Is that enough?
Music and dance need to be cohesive. How to achieve this? This also needs ideally to link with Drama/narration
"The performance should demonstrate elements of all 4 arts disciplines and have connections to the other curriculum areas in this course." - I think we need to weave other curriculum area/s into the performance?? Thoughts?
Performance Roles
-
Ash: Visual Arts (if we do forestry, I have an idea for pine/economy etc)
-
-
Ella - what would you like to do? Depending on the direction we go, do you think I need to do the connecting a curriculum area?
-
Performance
Opening a book - each page has a corresponding arts area i.e. page one - dance, page 2 - visual, page 3 music?
-
To add to the idea of the book: Each arts area is responsible for telling ONE part of the story we choose, this way there is no need for the music to match the dancing etc. Although perhaps this isn't collaborative enough? Thoughts?
Hauora / Wellbeing. Full circle in society from following Te Ao Māori principles to being focused on wealth and profit, now returning to understanding the connectedness. Social Sciences.

Whenua Land, Place, Roots
Forestry
Social Science
Understand how cultural practises reflect and express peoples customs, traditions, and values
Understand how people make significant contributions to New Zealand society (forestry/paper milling, how much does this bring into economy?)
Cultural, spiritual and commercial value
Foreign ownership and the conflict this can create, especially in regards to carbon vs. logging.
Local land being sold to large foreign companies.
Issue of converting farm land into forestry - less land for animals/crops, resulting in less food for New Zealanders. land often sold to foreign investors (Climate change, CO2 emissions/targets)
Spiritual bonds to the land - Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, who provides unity, identity and sustenance. Must protect against deforestation.
Science Link:
Native trees:Rongoā, observation/classification, Planet earth and beyond - earths systems/resources, living world - life processes? interacting systems - describe how natural features are changed and resources affected by natural and human actions.
Conservation - Kauri Dieback, re-planting programs.
Native birds and how their ecosystems/ habitats change as a result of logging. For example, history tells us that in Te Tairawhiti region the noise of the native birds used to be deafening and now there are only small patches of native bush left as it was all cleared for farm land of which much has been converted for forestry
