When Dr Reynolds (the leader of the Puritans at the conference) mentioned ‘presbyters’, James responded ‘My Lords, the bishops, I thank you that you do plead for my Supremacy, but if you were once out and these men in place, I know what would become of my Supremacy, no Bishop, no King as before I said’. Here, this can be seen as unfavourable for the Puritans, as their views against the episcopal system were not implemented, as James believed that a different church governement would ultimately lead to the questioning of his authority.
