Social Influence
Minority influence
Consistency
Over time, the consistency in the minority's views increases the amount of interest from other people
This consistency might be agreement between people in the minority group (synchronic consistency) and/or consistency over time (diachronic consistency)
-
Minority influence is the most effective if the minority keeps the same beliefs, both over time and between all the individuals that form the minority. Its effective because it draws attention to the minority view
-
Commitment
-
It is important that these extreme activities pose some risk to the minority group because this demonstrates commitment to the cause
Majority group members will then pay more attention to the minority's cause. This is called the augmentation principle
Minority influence is more powerful if the minority demonstrates dedication to their position, by making personal sacrifices or risks. This is effective because it shows the minority is acting out of self-interest
Flexibility
Nemeth (1986) argued that consistency is not the only important factor in the minority influence because it can be interpreted negatively
Being extremely consistent and repeating the same arguments and behaviours again and again can be seen as rigid, dogmatic, unbending and inflexible - this can be very off putting to the majority and unlikely to result in any conversions to the minority position
Members of the minority need to be prepared to adapt their point of view and accept reasonable and valid counter-arguments
-
Relentless consistency could be counter productive if it is seen by the majority as unbending and unreasonable. Therefore minority influence is more effective if the minority show flexiblity by accepting the possibility of compromise
The process of change
Consistency, commitment and flexibility all make you think about the topic
If you hear something new, it tends to make you stop and think about it, especially if the source of the information/view is consistent and passionate.
This deep processing is what is most important in the process of conversion to a different minority view point
-
The more conversions that happen, the faster the rate of conversion occurs

Artificial tasks
A limitation of minority influence research is that the tasks are involved are as artificial as Asch's line judgement task
-
Minority influence studies, such as Moscovici et al.'s are lacking in external validity and are limited in what they can tell us about minority influence in real life
-
-
Minority influence is a form of social influence in which a minority of people persuade others to adopt their beliefs, attitudes or behaviours
Minority influence leads to internalisation or conversion, in which private attitudes are changed as well as public behaviours
Social change
-
-
-
Social change occurs when whole societies rather than just individuals adopt new attitudes, beliefs and ways of doing things.
Examples include: accepting that the earth orbits the sun, women suffrage, gay rights and environmental issues

Conformity
Types of conformity
-
Identification
-
We act in the same way as the group when with the group because we value it and want to be a part of it
