Adsorption - Coggle Diagram
Adsorption
Desorption
Substance released from or through a surface :pen:
Increase the temp of the adsorbent (or reduce adsorbate partial pressure)
Enables recovery
Permits re-use of adsorbates
Adsorbents
Must selectively concentrate one or more components from a fluid
Selective binding of one or more components
Selective Geometric exclusion of certain components
Selective differences in intra-particle diffusion rates of components
Must show reversability
So it can be recovered
Have high delta loading
Change in weight of adsorbate per unit weight of adsorbent between adsorbing and desorbing steps
Size and shape
Must minimise mass transfer effects
Must minimise pressure drop
Solvent = adsorbent
Usually in the form of a fixed bed
Pass fluid through and solid particles adsorb fluid components
Like small pellets, beads or granules
Porous structure
Many holes = SA/volume ratio is high
The criteria
Separability
Relative volatility < 1.5
Product of interest is a high-boiler at low conc
Boiling range of one set of components overlaps the range of another
Exothermic process
It is spontaneous so entropy is less than 0
Adsorption restricts the adsorbate therefore decreasing
Gas/liqud solute accumulates on the surface of a solvent forming a molecular or atomic film :pen:
Atomic film = adsorbate
