Corrasion - rocks scrape against the bottom of the river making it deeper
Hydraulic action - when sheer force of the water gets into the river bed and banks and breaks them apart
Ox-bow lake
2) This causes the neck of the meander to get narrower and eventually breaks through often causing a flood.
3) This creates a new channel and an island in the old meander.
The river deposes material on the inside of the bend it has broken through.
1) Rivers flow fastest on the outside of the bend - this leads to erosion
Rivers flow slowest on the inside of the bend - this leads to deposion
4) This eventually cuts off the old, creating an ox-bow lake.

Levee - Lower course
2) The build-up of silt raises the river above the flood plain
The river then floods and silt is deposited on the river banks
3) Regular flooding continues the build up of silt at the sides of the river
The built up Levees usually protect the land from further flooding
