Definitions of abnormality
Statistical Infrequency
EG - Low IQ - someone who is under the average IQ may be considered abnormal, same with someone and a higher IQ
How common traits are deemed as abnormal in comparison to the rest of the population
:red_cross: - Not always a negative trait - for example, those with high IQ are a desired trait rather than considered abnormal
:red_cross: - Some of these traits (depression) are common = around one in six adults have the disorder
Deviation from social norms
when someone deviates from what society expects of them - what is socially acceptable
For instance, one culture may deem something acceptable whilst another will not - homosexuality or public displays of affection
:check: - respects cultural differences, not enforcing a western ethnocentric view of abnormality on other cultures
:check: - real life application - tribes in africa dress with little clothing - deemed acceptable behaviour whereas in a western ideology that would be deemed a deviation

Failure to function adequately
Inability to cope with life
- can the person survive in the world around us and interact with the world
Maldaptive behaviour
- individuals behave in ways against their long term best interest - self harm
Personal Anguish
- suffering from anxiety because of their inability to cope
Observer discomfort
- people around them feel discomfort due to certain behaviours or bad personal hygiene
irrational behaviour and unconventional behaviour
:red_cross: - maldaptive behaviour is not always an indictation of mental illness - smoking is also seen as against someones best interest long term
