NEW RIGHT & FAMILY
They see the 'normal' Nuclear family as best & the cornerstone of society. They argue that the traditional family is 'under threat' & social changes have undermined traditional values such as marriage
New Right supports traditional values & institutions. It emphasises the importance of the traditional nuclear family unit & are very similar to the functionalist approach.
Threats= increase in divorce, gay & lesbian families, one parents, cohabitation, welfare state policy
They see nuclear family as performing important functions for securing social stability through: providing emotional support for children, socialising them into the culture of society & estabilishing respect & conformity to social norms & values, absent fathers- lack of discipline & single mums need benefits, working mums- maternal deprivation (lacking motherly love)
-
MURRAY & MARSHLAND: argue that welfare state has undermined personal responsibility & self help & the importance of support from families. They have an issue with lone parent mothers gaining support from welfare state as they argue this encourages young women to have babies even if they can't afford them
This has created an underclass: high levels of illegitimacy, lone parenthood & family stability. This contributes to wider problems in society such as alcohol/drug abuse, yob culture, crime, fiddling with the benefit system, educational underachievement
They associate the decline of traditional families and the rise of lone parents to the rise of a dependency culture and a work shy underclass that wants to avoid working by claiming welfare benefits.
DEPENDENY CULTURE= a set of values & beliefs & a way of life centered on dependence on others particularly from the welfare state.
UNDERCLASS= A social group at the bottom of the social hierarchy that are somewhat cut off from mainstream society
REDWOOD: Expressed concern about the cost of welfare payments to single-parent families & these payments encouraged single parenthood & the subsequent creation of the underclass
DENNIS: Argues that if young boys don't have fathers as role models growing up due to families splitting up, they will become delinquents.- stats show that most delinquents come from broken homes
What do they want?
-
people to live in nuclear families rather than lone parenthood, homosexual relationships or divorce
To see a return to traditional family values with policies such as: reducing births outside of marriage, reducing divorce & reducing welfare benefits for non conventional families- these will end social problems such as delinquency, teenage pregnancies, educational underacheivement & child poverty
AO3: Feminists such as Abbott & Wallace see the New Right as a form of patriarchy. Attacks on single parent families & implies that a women's place is a home.
AO3: Marxists argue that poverty & inequality are not the fault of the individual but the result of social structure
