WARM BATH THEORY (Parsons): described the nuclear family as being fulfilling & has described it as a warm bath where fulfilment, well being, comfort & rejuvenation are provided for by the nuclear family (wife provides this for husband) in the same way that a warm bath makes us feel after an exhausting day
AO3- Ignores domestic violence, family is not always a good place
GENDER ROLES (Parsons): Men take on an INSTRUMENTAL ROLE (head of the household, breadwinners & make the important decisions) & women take on an EXPRESSIVE ROLE (caring, do domestic labour & care for children)

FUNCTIONAL FIT FAMILY (Parsons): as society changes, the types of family that 'fits' that society & the functions it performs change
Pre industrial society: big extended families, women had many children as they were an economic asset that made you money
Industrial society: steam railways/factories, family size got smaller

Today family: nuclear families are still common, beanpole family has increased, grandparents caring for kids whilst mother is at work, not as child centred
