THEMES
Reason & Unreason
The Countess represents unreason. Reason suppose and says that death is the symbol of the end but she defies this law because she is a living dead woman. The narrator refers to her as “ Juliet's tomb” to show that, just as Juliet was alive in the deguise of death, the Countess is dead in the deguise of life. The Countess' irrational existence gives her great power, but it condemns her to misery.
The young man does not believe in the supernatural, so he does not tremble with fear when he enters the Countess's home. He is not afraid of her, even when she says to him that he is her prey. He also rides a bicycle, which symbolises human reason at work. The bicycle follows the basis of human laws. When the soldier initially refuses to give his bicycle to the governess, he symbolically refuses to believe in the irrational. He refuses to be separated from his bicycle just as he refuses to be separated from his reason.
Light & Darkness
the countess, she lives in darkness (she is an “invention of darkness”), which represents ambiguity and mystery. She can not be exposed to light because as a vampire her body can disintegrate.
the soldier embodies 'the light of reason', his face even blinds the Countess so that she must wear glasses in his presence
Entrapment
The countess is trapped in an unasked-for and seemingly irrevocable destiny, just as her lark is trapped in its cage. She takes pleasure in caging the lark because she herself is caged. She cannot free herself from her fate. The countess, although powerful and immortal, is still an object, she is described as a doll. Her beauty is so perfect that it becomes unnatural and false like a mask. She is stuck in a "role"
Death & Sexual Awakening
For the Countess, a lack of sexual understanding and experience is a weakness. For the soldier, virginity and sexual naivete are sources of strength. The soldier's sexual and transformative power is so great precisely because it is unexploted. The soldier is indeed "more than he knows," because he is able to transform the Countess into a human by kissing her.
The countess dies when she realises her desire for the young man. The rose she leaves him may be a symbol of both her desire and the virginity she has granted him.
