Past regrets
wish + past perfect (We use this form when we want to express a stronger regret about a past situation)
-
would rather/sooner (We can use rather and sonner interchangeably to show mild regret or critisim relating to a past situation)
We can use would rather/sooner + past simple/perfect or would rather/sooner + have + past participle if the subject is the same in both parts of sentencen I would rather/sooner not have overslept. It meant i was late for school
subject + should have + past participle (This usually expresses mild regret or criticism regarding something in the past.)
Mixed conditionals
-
If + past perfect, would/wouldn´t + infinitive (When we want to express that a situation that took place in the past has a result in the present. In this case the part of the condition (if) will be the same as the one used in a third conditional; and the phrase that expresses the result will be the same as the one used in a second conditional.) Example: If I had taken the underground, I wouldn't be in a traffic jam.
If+past simple/continuous, would/wouldn,t have+past participle (When we want to express a probable result in the past about a situation that is not real in the present. In this case the part of the condition (if) will be the same as the one used in a second conditional; and the phrase that expresses the result will be the same as the one used in a third conditional.) Example: If I had more willpower, I would have given up smoking long ago.
Inverted conditionals
Inversion is used in conditional sentences where “if” is replaced by “had”, “were” and “should''. Examples: Had we known that, we would have made a different decision.
