Role of Cultural History in Education
Colonial Period (1640-1770)
beliefs during this period included Protestant belief that God spoke In and through people
desire for children to be able to read so they can read the Bible
Massachusetts School Law of 1647: "all communities pay for a school teacher" and "attendance of boys and girls for preliminary literacy" (Quantz 176).
Early National Period (1770-1820)
Thomas Jefferson advocated for public schooling
Jefferson worked to provide free school but ultimately slaves were excluded and 1800 - 1835 racism was shaping education system
Thomas Jefferson made a proposal for the "Bill for the More General Diffusion of Knowledge"
proposal for both boys and girls (not slaves) to learn math, reading, writing, books for Instruction
free education until 3rd grade
Bible was excluded from public education
Land of Ordinance of 1785
way to pay for public schools in expanded territories
public education started in midwest territories before 13 states
Mid-ninteenth Century (1820-1880)
Common School Movement led to rapid development in education
high schools were starting to be for the poorer families
one school allowed black students for free, but no girls
Protestant Christian Morality
focused on obedience, self-sacrifice, self-control, self-restraint, teaching of Protestant Bible
start of routines, rituals, school organizations and curriculums
Capitalism
focused on who would be allowed to attend school
no education for slave children
free schooling to white children
valued hard work, thrift, savings, competition, individualism, property ownership
Nationalism
pushed in schools to encourage common culture and language
Civil War - union army freed the slaves
1865 Freedmen's Bureau focused on free schooling for black children
native schools attended only by black students, taught by black people
Did that truly end racism? Personally, I think people started to take responsibility for the wrong and change it, but racism still occurs today.
Progressive Era (1880-1920)
Common School Movement
one room school houses taught by one teacher ended by the 19th century
education focused to teaching students for industrial and factory work
family life shifted as society shifted from farming to factories
village to urban schools
Today's Culture
personally grew up with a "time of silence" during morning announcements for different religious purposes, no longer during 2010s
still not able to speak freely of personal religions in public schooling
