Explanatory surveys - testing theories, or attempting to produce new theories on a topic.
Disadvantages
Concepts and forms of language used in the survey may be misinterpreted, or the respondents may lie; validity.

Forms of social surveys
Cross-sectional are snapshot studies providing information about particular moments e.g. the Census.
Longitudinal are when information is gathered over a long period of time, allowing for changes in behaviour or attitudes to be traced over time.
Used by sociologists, government departments and market researchers.
