The Conduction System
The cardiac conduction system is a group of specialised cells located in the wall of the heart which sends electrical impulses to the cardiac muscle, causing it to contract.
Definitions
-
-
Atrioventricular Node - This node relays the impulse between the upper and lower sections of the heart
Bundle of his - A collection of heart muscles cells that transmits the electrical impulse from the AV node via the bundle branches
-
Ejection Fraction % = Amount of blood pumped out of the ventricle / Total amount of blood in the ventricle
-
-
Sub maximal: Exercise performed at a intensity below
an athletes maximal aerobic capacity or max VO2.
-
The cardiac cycle
-
-
Atrial systole - The sinoatrial contractions causing the left and right atria to force the remaining blood into the ventricles
Ventricular systole - Impulse travels -- atrioventricular node -- bundle of his -- purkinje fibres causing both ventricles to contract ejecting out the blood
Starlings law
Venous return - The blood returning to the heart = the blood leaving the heart. Cardiac output is dependent on the extensibility of the cardiac muscle fibres. The more the cardiac muscle fibres stretch during the diastolic (passive filling) stage of the cardiac cycle, the stronger the walls can contract and force blood into the circulatory system (ejection fraction).
