MATERIAL DEPRIVATION: A lack of materials/funding. A term used to describe the effects of low income on a home. Some people cannot afford things they need to gain success
SMITH & NOBLE: There are 'hidden costs of schooling' etc lunches, transport, stationary, textbooks, laptops
RIDGE: Found that the main costs for poorer families were uniform, lunches & school trips. Some parents had difficulty finding sums as small as 50p
GOODMAN & GREGG: Found that poorer families tend to have less educational resources such as computers.
HALSEY: Emphasised the importance of material deprivation & the link between social class background & educational outcome
FREE SCHOOL MEALS: In 2015 1 in 3 Free School Meals pupils achieved 5 A*-C GCSE grades compared to pupils who didn't have FSM (2 in 3/65%)
CULTURAL CAPITAL: The middle class cultural activities/experiences & attributes which puts Middle class children at an advantage when they get to school. This has an impact on children's attainment
SULLIVAN: If you go to the theatre you're more likely to pass your GCSE's
FEINSTEIN: Found that poor nutrition linked to the lower classes has an impact on achievement. Also noted that cultural capital has an impact, from as young as preschool age
BALL, BOWE & GEWIRTZ: PRIVILEGED- SKILLED CHOOSERS: Middle class parents who use economic & cultural capital to gain educational capital for their children. They have full advantage of the choices open to them. They understand the importance of putting schools as their first choice and meetings deadlines. Their economic capital meant that they were able to afford to move their children around the education system so that they could get the best deal out of it, such as travelling costs to get their child into the best school.
SEMI-SKILLED CHOOSERS: WC but were ambitious for their child but didn't have cultural capital & found it hard to understand the education market & relied on people's opinions on it
DISCONNECTED LOCAL CHOOSERS: WC parents who were restricted by their lack of economic & cultural capital. It was difficult to understand school admission procedures. Looked at safety & facilities rather than league tables. No money to travel to school of their choice
HARRISON: Found a close correlation between poverty deprivation & low exam results
PARENTS:
GILLES: Found parents with high level qualifications use their knowledge to help their children
DOUGLAS: Found that working class cannot afford higher education. Also said that working class parents do not support their children in terms of education due to lack of understanding
BERNSTEIN: ELABORATED CODE- Spoken by the middle to upper classes. This is a wide language of vocabulary needed to speak language of the higher classes. RESTRICTED CODE- Spoken by lower classes. This code is very restricted in the sense that their vocabulary is limited
RIST: Found that teachers make educational judgments based on social class
LABELLING/SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY: CICOUREL- Found that careers teachers give different advice based on social class
BECKER- Ideal pupil, often MC & articulate
SUGARMAN- IMMEDIATE- WC would rather receive the rewards instantly with having to work for it later (eg, going straight from college to work) DEFERRED- MC see investing for the future as being worth while as they receive a much better rewards later on (eg going to uni)
LEWIS- Looked at the culture of poverty & found that a norm within poor communities is to focus on the now & not the future. Therefore, the communities fail to acknowledge the importance of the education system
