Rastogi- Human Capital theory
Parsons and Bales
Murdock
Wage of 22 per cent of women compared to 14 per cent for men- Gender inequalities due to men having more human capital- Men develop more human capital by having more education and investing in extra work that allows them to develop extra skills and qualifications- women's human capital is limited because they are stuck in the home and ofpt for career breaks to look after their children- Men are paid more due to having more human capital- Rastogi- human capital as 'knowledge, competency, attitude and behaviour embedded as an individual'- used to support Functionalist views on the meritocracy with the argument that men and women serve different roles and functions in society and rewarded in different ways.
Absorb anger that could otherwise be directed at capitalism often through sexual and physical violence- stop a revolution taking place by stopping anger being directed at the capitalist system- experience triple shift- Capitalism perpetuates as the bourgeoisie carry on ruling the proletariat supporting a proletariat style relationship as women work for free creating next generation of workers
Women benefit capitalism by providing unpaid labour- experience dual burden- wife looks after husband by caring for him so is less likely to challenge the capitalist system- If women were paid, there would be a huge re-distribution in wealth- still relevant today as women take out time to be housewives
Reserve army of labour, paid low wages and have low promotional opportunity's- hired and fired as the economy dictates- more women are employed at Christmas time when more workers are needed- to less likely being unionised, less able to resist redundancy- Unemployed married women may not be eligible to receive state benefits if their husbands are working
Inequality began when capitalism started up so women's subordinate position is results of ownership of private property- Women are ignored because men's aim is continuing their legacy by passing down their private property to their sons- experience enforced monogamy and restricted sexuality as only way man can make sure baby is his- Exploiter-exploited relationship that occurs between the bourgeoisie and proletariat is translated to the household between men and women
Women are the expressive role looking after the children and being the housewife- men are the instrumental role being the breadwinner- roles are socialised from childhood- benefits society as children are taught societies norms and values through socialisation so that their is not chaos- nuclear family is essential and is the foundation of society- differences are innate, ascribed at birth helping contribute to functional society- women are less motivation so less suited to labour market meaning paid less
Oakley
Sharpe
Dunscombe and Marsden
Barren and Norris
Women are in the secondary labour market, low paid and have low promotional opportunities due to patriarchal stereotypes about women's unsuitability for the workplace- women were unable progress up the career ladder which was due to employees discriminating against women based on sexist assumptions and stereotype- take 70 years at the current rate of progress to see an equal number of female and male directors of FTSE 100 companies and Fawcett society 2013-Gender pay gap which is 24.8% for the private business sector whereas it is 17.1% of the public sector- If a mother is absence from the workplace, future wages decrease by 5%
West and Zimmerman
Women do the 5C's of cooking, cleaning, catering, caring and clerical- Men hold patriarchal stereotypes about women's unsuitability for the workplace such as Women do not need a promotional because they are financially dependent on men, women are unreliable because they take career breaks and men do not like working for women- women do not tend to have good promotional aspects as it then often required women to have years of uninterrupted service for promotion and therefore women are ruled out women as they may have career breaks due to having children
Socialised into gender roles through Manipulation (behaviour), Canalisation (toys and activities) and Verbal applications- reinforced by agents such as education and the media so the socialisation becomes internalised- Women experience a dual burden by having to look after their children as well as be the housewife Therefore Women have a lower status position in the labour market due to the socialisation of being a housewife
Women are stuck in a part time trap as have to combine working with looking after the children- unable to progress up the career ladder due to being stuck in the secondary labour market- limited time for themselves- dual burden
Rational choice theory
Hakim
Women have a rational choice as no longer constraint by patriarchy and capitalism due to the development of contraception and laws- gender inneqality's are a result of behaviour and attitudes of women- Not the victims of unfair employment practices- able to go into the workplace due to the expansion of white-collar opportunities- 60% are adaptive, 20% are work centered and 20% are home centered- when women and men work, women do 15 hours of housework a week whereas for men it is only 5 hours a week- women are advantaged because take advantage of erotic capital such as sexual attractiveness, charm and charisma-last 40 years, the number of women in the workplace is increasing and the number of men is decreasing as ONS showed that of June 2020, more than 72.7% of women aged 16–64 are employed, which had risen from 52.8% in the first quarter of 1971- gender inequality is a manifestation of patriarchal relationships and ignores that men and women clearly make “lifestyle choices”
Women do 57 varieties of unpaid labour in the home- dual burden- limited amount of time for themselves- well being of the women is neglected which can have consequences
Gender inequalities are due to unfair employment practises and unfair law practises- Equality Act 2010 and the Sex Discrimination Act tried to overcome this although more work needs to be done- Focus on obtaining equal opportunities and equal rights for males and females in society in areas such as the workplace, education and politics- to be erased, gender neutral language is needed and boys need to be taught what is right and wrong
Marxist Feminists- Women disadvantaged by capitalism and patriarchy as women have to look after the children and the husband preparing them for the workplace to continue capitalism- In the workplace, women fulfil low paid and deskilled roles as well as being part of the reserve army of labour continuing capitalism as women have to be dependent on their husbands in order to have money
Gender inequality due to capitalism- Natural for women to cook, clean and sew and is passed down through the family to breed new generations who buy capitalist products- Gender differences makes a divide in society which distracts away from the real problem of capitalism makes a weaker group that are less likely to rebel against powerful bourgeoisie
Women located in the home due to biological function of childbearing and physique meant they were less able to perform strenuous tasks- Nuclear family was found in 250 societies so is universal- gender roles are beneficial for both genders
Gender inequality is functional for society and is due to biological differences- women give birth naturally and therefore should naturally look after children whereas men should go into the workplace
Fawcett Society 2013- Women make up 20.4 per cent of directors of FTSE 100 board and just 11.1 per cent of UK banks CEO’s are women

- 2012 there were still 13,917,000 males in full-time employment, compared to 7,682,000 females and 3,048,000 males compared to 7,533,000 females in part-time employment
- Savage, in 2000s, Men are 40% more likely to climb the career ladder than women as women have a glass ceiling which are invisible barriers stopping them from rising up the career ladder- 300,000 women are sacked just for being pregnant, even though this is illegal
- West and Zimmerman, male employees hold stereotypical beliefs of women for primary sector jobs as Women do not need a promotion because they are financially dependent on men, men do not like working for women so not promoted and women are less dependent because they have career breaks

- Delphy and Leonard- Family is the institution that play a major part in women oppressing- women forced to conform to patriarchal society- family is an economic system benefiting from the exploitation of work from women as un paid- husbands holds the economic power
- 2012 there were still 13,917,000 males in full-time employment, compared to 7,682,000 females and 3,048,000 males compared to 7,533,000 females in part-time employment
Freeman
married women are suppose to be dependent on thier husbands wages while they focus on the home responsibilities- married women are often regarded as 'secondary workers' whose main responsibility is to home and children- women may face inequality in the employment industry as the bourgeoisie may place them in the reserve army of labour as they are seen as less important in the work industry and have more important roles in the home
Gender inequality due to women's low status, patriarchy and social attitudes- Horizontal segregation as difference between number of men and women in the workplace as primary education dominated by women but only 25% of headmistresses are women- Glass ceiling, women are unable to progress up the career ladder and 440,000 women lose out on pay and promotion as a result of pregnancy meaning men climb up faster due to hidden advantages- - Purcell, Women and men start out with equal pay, but by 7 years men have overtaken women
