Topic: Medical testing. Thesis Statement: No we should not use animals for animal testing.
Introduction
Hook Options
More than 100 million animals were tested on in the year 2020.
92% of products are tested on animals before used on humans causing animals to become crippled, burned or poisoned.
More than 100, 000 animals were subjected to the worst level of pain due to testing in laboratories in Canada.
Specialized Information
Animal testing for research purposes has dated back to the twelfth century.
Animal testing was first developed so that scientists could test how safe and effective their product was before allowing humans to use it.
Animal testing started when Ibn Zuhr decided to use animals to practice his surgical procedures on before he applied them to his patients.
History and Background
Mercury, a commonly used chemical in skin lightening creams, is a very dangerous chemical which can cause damage to kidneys and nervous system. Mercury can also lead to many skin problems and can make you more prone to diseases. This chemical got restricted from being used in larger amounts above a scale of 65ppm in 2008 and is currently banned in the U.S.
Lead was commonly used in cosmetics to lighten a person's face. Lead was only recently banned from being used in makeup products in 2018 after the FDA made it known to the public that lead was highly toxic metal that could cause many health issues.
The FDA (Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act) is an agency that specializes in finding toxic chemicals in cosmetic products.
REASON #1
Animal Testing is Dangerous for Humans
Because animal skin is different than human skin, a consistent reaction between humans and animals is not plausible, putting buyers at risk for possible reactions that could occur.
Through clinical trials it has been proven that 95% of all drugs that are tested on animals and deemed safe and effective end up failing human trials because they don't work or are dangerous.
Because animal testing takes so long to come to a finalized result, humans are unable to access the medication they may need to cure their disease leading to more issues and possibly death.
It takes over eight years for a medication to be tested thoroughly and for the FDA to finalize the new drug before it becomes open for the public use.
.
Animals testing can mislead scientists on data as they often miss the main signs of toxicity for humans.
Vioxx was a drug made to treat arthritis was tested and results showed that it worked for the monkeys which it was tested on. When they tested it on a human, it cause many heart attacks and strokes in which many ended up dying.
REASON #2
Animal Testing is Wasteful
The majority of the time scientists don't end up publishing or using the research that the tests provided. As a result, animals lives are being effortlessly wasted and thrown away
Almost 95% of animal tests fail and are not published to the public
The cost of animal testing is extremely expensive and the majority of tests don't get published or used for research causing money to be wasted.
On average, a cost of $16 billion is spent on animal testing each year and the tests are not always a reliable source for information.
The testing harms animals and prolongs the waiting for humans to get the medication or cosmetic products that they need. In the same amount of time, scientists can research different drug effects and get products out to the public in a more time efficient way.
It takes an average of two years for a test to be to show side effects and eight years to be fully developed to be able to show to the public.
REASON #3
Animal Testing is Cruel
Animal that are being tested on are deliberately sickened with chemicals and infectious diseases and then killed when the experiment has been completed.
Each year, an average of 110 million animals are killed due to the procedures involved with animal testing and lack of medical care given to the animals.
Animals get injected with toxins and drugs which can lead the animals to become blinded, deafened, burned and infected with many diseases.
The labs force mice and rats to inhale chemicals, they force feed dogs pesticides to see how their body reacts with them, and drip corrosive materials into rabbits eyes.
Animals are generally not given sedatives while being tested on due to the cost of the anaesthetics so the animals are able to feel every ounce of pain in the procedures. Scientists overlook the pain by valuing human comfort over an animal's life.
Animals go through excruciating pain while undergoing procedures as their spines get crushed, wires are sometimes inserted into their brains and their bodies are introduced to toxic chemicals. Even after all this pain and suffering, the tested animals are put back into their cages without being given any painkillers or they are killed once they are unable to perform any more tests on them.
