Prepare children for adult life by transition of 'ascribed status' of the family to 'achieved status' of school and wider society- through judging students on same standards eg. exams like in work everyone is judged the same
School is 'focal socialising agency'- bridge between family and wider society, needed as family and society operate different principles, so kids need to learn new way of living

Wrong- 'over socilaised' view of people as puppets of society, imply that students passively accept they are taught and obey authority
Not all children have equal chances of success, fails to recognize that the value consensus may be that of ruling elite
