- Industrial expansion result of making more efficient use of existing factories & equipment
- Large industrial centres - Magnitogorsk - built from scratch & became large cities
→ 1929 - 25 people living at Magnitogorsk by 1932 250,000 were
- Facilities were primitive w/ workers housed in tents & temporary huts
- volunteered workers had to rely on revolutionary attitudes & socialist beliefs for motivation due to hard work

Gulags: prisoners
- slave labour was used to complete large building projects
- economic resources were located in cold,remote regions where nobody wanted to work

- winter of 1931-32 10,000 died
→to reduce costs & speed up project depth was reduced from 22 feet to 12 - essentially useless for everything

→ justification was the need to build up an industrial infrastructure of factories, communication networks before other sectors to flourish
Factory work
- factory mangers faced w/ unrealistic targets
→ had to use enterprising methods to reach targets - ambushing resources destined for other factories
- To fulfil targets quality often sacrificed
- Stalingrad tractor factory - supposed to produce 500 tractors a month in 1930 but it had only managed 8 in June - most broke down within 3 days
