What is it?
Visual aid that encourages children to make decisions.
It demonstrates to a child the various possibilities open to them
Why use a Choice Board
ECCE provides a wide range of play opportunities for children
Some children feel overwhelmed by the number of learning experiences on offer
Offering a small number of choices, supports children's emotional wellbeing & increases their participation in the learning experiences on offer
Supports a child's sense of autonomy

Match the amount of choices displayed to the child's stage of development

What is it?
It is a way to help children to participate in an activity/play experience that they typically require support to engage in

Premack Principle
Premack Principle
- Encourages a child to participate in an activity that is less desirable for them, by providing something they enjoy doing, once they have finished the first activity
Why use the First then Strategy
To help a child to participate in an activity that they typically require support to engage in
Using the First then Strategy
verbal instructions/cues
Introduce the strategy when the child is feeling calm & content
Be consistent in how you use the strategy
Provide positive feedback to the child when they complete the activity on the 'First' side of the board
