DEFINITION

Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to the blood vessels in the tissue at the back of the eye (retina).

Characterised by hyperglycaemia, basement membrane thickening, pericyte loss, microaneurysms, IRMA and preretinal neovascularisation
