ENCULTURATION
-process, you learn your native culture
ETHNIC IDENTITY
-commitment to the beliefs and philosophy of your culture (act as shield)
ACCULTRATION
-process learn the rules and norms of a culture different from your native culture

CULTURE DIFFERS
High context
-Much of the information in communication is in the context or in the person
Low context
-Information is explicitly stated in the verbal message
High Power Distance
-concentrated in the hands of a few
-difference between power held by the people compare to ordinary citizens E.g. Mexico and Brazil
Low Power Distance
-power is distributed throughout the citizenry.
-less on symbols of power, and less of a problem is crated if you fail to use a respectful title. E.g. Denmark
Masculine Cultures
-men are viewed as assertive, oriented to material success and strong (Emphasize success. E.g. Italy)
Feminine Cultures
-women are viewed as modest, focused on the quality of life and tender
-Emphasizes the quality of life and socialize their people to be modest. E.g. Sweden
High-Ambiguity Tolerant
-don't feel threatened by unknown situations
Low-Ambiguity Tolerant
-tend to avoid uncertainty and have a great deal of anxiety about knowing what will happen next
Individualist
-responsible to your own conscience
-compete for leadership in a small group.
Collectivist
-responsible for the entire group
-culture leadership would be shared and rotated
Long-Term Orientation
-an orientation that promotes the importance of future rewards
-organization in long-term orientation cultures look to profits in the future
Short-Term Orientation
-look more to the past and the present
-organization in short-term orientation look to more immediate rewards.
Indulgence
-cultures high in indulgence are those that emphasize the gratification of desires and focus on having fun and enjoying life
Restrain
-cultures high in restrain are those that foster the curbing of such gratification and its regulation by social norms. members are more cynical, pessimistic
Principal of Intercultural Communication
Educate Yourself
-learn about other cultures by Readings, documentary, megazines and websites, talk and chat.
Recognize Difference
-always assume that similarities exist.
Reduce Ethnocentrism
-Ethnocentrism is the tendency to evaluate the values, beliefs, and behaviors of your own cultures as being more positive
Confront Your Stereotype
-a fixed impression of a group of people. May be positive and negative. Can lead to ignorance of the unique characteristic
